Dean’s Message Poised for Another Year of Learning! Transitions are inevitable in our existence. They can be challenging at times, but we who are called the faithful also know that transitions -- when harnessed – are mere stepping stones in advancement. | |
As we prepare for the 2009-2010 academic year, we do so having undergone some significant transitions within our staffing. Yet, I am confident that with our capable and committed administration, faculty, staff, students and alumni we will continue our ascent. | Dr. Gene Rice retired from his position as Professor of Old Testament Language and Literature after more than five decades of incomparable service. | Dr. Nyasha Junior will join our faculty this fall as Assistant Professor of Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. She joins us having previously served as Assistant Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Dayton. | Dr. Rosetta E. Ross, Associate Dean of Academic Affairs, successfully concluded a one-year tenure here in July. Among her many contributions was the firm foundation laid for us to continue with our current curriculum review and revision. We wish her all the best. |
Dr. Ron Hopson, who has been a part of the faculty for a number of years, will serve as the Interim Academic Dean. A national search for a permanent academic dean will take place during the year. The work and office of the Academic Dean is vital to our continued prominence. We warmly and enthusiastically support Dr. Hopson as he settles into his new role. | Rev. Paula Hall was hired in June as our Instructional Technology and Media Specialist. She will provide professional technical and media support to our community through the Media Center and Computer Lab; provide resource development for classrooms and the Chapel; and enhance our overall readiness in multi-media, interactive and instructional technology. | Last, and certainly not least, Ms. Cassandra Newsome, who has diligently served our institution for 31 years, has officially retired. She will remain with us for a season on a part-time basis. | Friends, HUSD has harnessed these transitions and is poised for another year of learning. And, whatever changes occur, we remain committed to our mission to "educate, form and empower academic and religious leaders to transform the church and the world; and to celebrate the religious and cultural heritage of African Americans, the African Diaspora, and Africa, as we engage in the pursuit of excellence in scholarship and ministry, driven by a passion for justice and freedom, and a relentless search for truth." |
In the Presence, Alton B. Pollard III, Ph.D.
